Is there such a thing as Platonic friendship? The rakish Earl of Tressilian and virtuous Lady Killeaven are determined to prove it's true—a man and a woman can truly be just friends. In decadent Regency London, of course, their friendship proves more scandalous than any flaming affair.
And Tressilian, after years of "just friends," is starting to wonder if that is, indeed, all he wants to be. So this Royal Navy hero embarks on a campaign as dangerous and complex as any battle at sea, to win the heart and hand of the one woman who knows him too well to be seduced.
The Reluctant Lady is the second in the Regencies by Rasley series, and serves up the traditional Regency with an elegantly lush style and a dash of humor. 95K words, PG rated.

Another delightful story by Alicia Rasley. I can see I'll be reading a lot of her books. After having finished her novella "The Wilder Heart," I needed more of her beautiful story-telling and heart-wrenching romance. This was very satisfying, and a pleasure to read. I was torn between staying up all night to read versus stretching it out to savor the experience a bit longer.

I am a sucker for a romance between friends. Kristen is a prim and proper widow, always living by her virtuosity, never breaking the rules. Brendan is a wild and crazy guy, charming beyond words, living a hedonistic life, but with a heart of gold, generous to a fault, and always loyal to his friends. Kristen resists his tempting suggestion for an affair, but Brendan senses something worthy and soothing in her constancy and her honesty, so they agree to be friends, jokingly resolving to "convert" the other.

The story is "long," not in word count, but in duration. It takes place over almost 5 or 6 years, so at times the author needs to "tell" rather than "show," but Rasley does this very nicely, giving us only the details we need, although quite descriptive. In an unusual twist to the typical romance formula, Kristen tolerates Brendan's many fleeting and temporary romances over the years, which added to the development of the type of solid and unconditional friendship that grew between them.

I sighed, I chuckled, I got a little choked up, and I cheered. I just loved this book. Obviously I clicked with Rasley's style of writing, as she just carried me away with her prose and her delightful characters. They were funny and flawed, sweet and loving.

My only disappointment was with some of the editing- I noticed a reviewer mentioned this over a year ago, and there was acknowledgement of this from the author and an effort to correct. However, some of these typos still exist, and they could be annoying - "eat" for "ear" (an unusual substitution when describing a steamy kiss!) and "law" for "jaw' (he hit his law?). But overall, it didn't irritate me enough to stop reading. More than anything, I thought this fine book deserved better editing.

The Reluctant Lady A Traditional Regency Romance Regency Escapades Book 2 edition by Alicia Rasley Romance eBooks Reviews

Alicia Rasley is probably the best Regency writer in the Georgette Heyer vein, but this is not one of her better efforts. As another reviewer said, too much ’telling’ or talking about the characters rather than ’showing’. Almost the whole book is commentary rather than dialogue or action.

I’d recommend Rasley’s "Royal Renegade" and "Poetic Justice" rather than this one.
I read Royal Renegade first and then Poetic Justice, and Reluctant Lady. I'm now reading Charity Begins at Home. It was hard to pick my favorite because I loved the first three so much. But, I think Reluctant Lady was my number 1 pick. Ms. Rasley presents unforgettable characters along with amazing plots. Her story-telling ability is beyond compare. I think Ms. Heyer is smiling as I write this!! My only complaint was series order--it was not very clear which to read first so I decided to just go by the historical year date on the opening page. Thank you for offering Royal Renegade free on a couple of months ago. Once I met Tatiana, I knew I'd found my groove and simply downloaded every Regency book that Alicia has ever written. What a talent. Thank you so much!
A delightful traditional (clean) Regency romance by an author whose novella, The Wilder Heart, I really enjoyed. The writing, like the heroine in this case, Kristen, was restrained, deliberate, graceful and somewhat sedate. But I liked the characters and the impossible situation they find themselves in our hero is a notorious rake and an earl, catnip to women, but in love with a widow above reproach and his touch morally. A naval captain, our earl's been too naughty a boy to be more than a friend to the upstanding baroness. She is appropriately leery of him and his attentions, keeping him at arm's length and chastising him at every opportunity--that is, until he manages to gain a toehold in her life and her children's hearts. Will she unbend? Will he reform? How things unfurl takes time, involves missteps, some strategizing and a touch of peril. Personally, I enjoyed the secondary characters and their brangling as much or more than the main pair, but both sets of lovers made this a fun, relaxing read. I'd compare her to Candice Hern, another author for Regency lovers to try.
The Reluctant Lady is a worthy relative of Georgette Heyer's Regency novels. Kristin Marlowe is a beautiful widow with two engaging children. The Earl of Tressilian is a dashing naval captain and a rake, famous for his inconstancy and numerous mistresses. Tressilian has various family members and retainers that form the background cast in the novel. There isn't anything new and different in this book, but the author writes well and keeps the story moving along and her situations and characters are interesting and believable.

My main criticism is that so much of the story is told through the characters thoughts -- page after page of them. I longed for some of Georgette Heyer's light dialogue. Either that or have the author do some major trimming in the lengthy prose descriptions of what the characters were seeing, feeling, thinking, wanting, or about to do.

I would also suggest that someone go through the book with a red pencil and correct the spelling, grammatical errors, and words that just don't make sense. At one point the heroine says, "One should always obey the miles". I'm pretty sure she meant "rules", but I had to stop and think about it, and that annoyed me. There are also a few missing periods, missing commas, "isnt" for "isn't", and missing spaces between periods and the beginning of the next sentence. Alicia Rasley is a good writer and I think that these are probably glitches when the manuscript was formatted for . Nevertheless, they detract from a work that deserves a flawless presentation.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it highly. I plan on reading the author's other works.
